1) Double click on My Computer icon, then double click on Dial-Up Networking.

2) Right click on your connection and select Properties from the menu.

3) Click on Server Types and only leave Enable software compression and TCP/IP checked. Then press the OK button.

From now on, your connection will be established as soon as the modem has finished connecting. You will not need to wait while your computer tries unsuccessfully to establish other types of connections to your ISP.

If you are connected to a network these instructions may or may not work. If they disable certain network functions, re-set the checkboxes to where they were before.
